SUMMER
SPANISH LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND
MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN COSTA RICA SUMMER 2010
DATES: JUNE 7th - AUGUST 15TH
STUDY FROM 1-10 WEEKS, TWO WEEK MINIMUM SUGGESTED
FOR LANGUAGE INTEGRATION
"Dear Charley,
Just wanted to let you know how gratified I am that we ended up picking COSI
- Eric had a fantastic time, loved his host family, and learned about the
subjunctive, plu-perfect, and conditional tenses in Spanish, and improved
his entire speaking ability. The field trips were excellent, the food wonderful,
and the host family couldn't have been better. The 3 weeks were worth every
penny I spent!!!! Thank you, thank you!!!", Andora Sprecher, Big Bear,
California, August 2009
"Dear Charley
(Aventuras Languages),
Just wanted you to know that Lily called us today to say that she had a wonderful
time in the program (COSI Teen Summer Program) and loved her host family.
All the family members were so kind to her. As she said, "I wish I could
have stayed two or three more weeks!"Her connection with the EF tour went
smoothly, too. Thank you so much for all your help (Aventuras)! This is just
the experience that I had hoped for for Lily! And, she feels her Spanish
has definitely improved, too!
Sincerely, Julie
Busher",
June 26, 2006, Vacaville, California
"Just a
quick note to let you know that Heather had a great time in Costa Rica. She
loved her host family, the culture, the school and the excursions. Please
convey to the host family that Heather thought they were wonderful and that
she misses them!
Thanks, Nancy Roddy", July 2005, Atlanta,
Georgia

Meringue as well as other traditional rhythms.
Cooking
class:
|
Students will prepare some typical Costa Rican dishes and learn the vocabulary
of the main ingredients used in Costa Rican cuisine.
|
Art

Students will draw, paint and create paper collages. Students will be encouraged
to use their imagination and discover new things in their environment. This
class is in Spanish.
|
|
Volunteer work/Service
Learning:
Participants have the opportunity to volunteer in public schools in poor
areas. Each volunteer works with a group of students who are from 7-12 years
old. Their activities include: teaching some English to the children, singing
songs in Spanish and English, maintaining the school facilities and working
with the children in the school's vegetable garden.
|
|
 |
Coffee Tour:
Students will visit a “finca” (coffee farm) where there
is a bilingual presentation that describes the historical importance of coffee
to Costa Rica.
The tour also shows parts of the production process and ends with a
coffee-tasting session.
|
| |
|
Arenal
Volcano:
Two days - one night. (Transportation, hotel
accommodations & meals included)
Visiting the active volcano is an unforgettable experience. The best time
to see it is definitely at night when the expelled lava from the volcano
can be seen. Participants will visit a spa close to the volcano which has
natural hot-water springs.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Poas volcano, river boat &
waterfall:
This field trip includes a visit to the Poas volcano, La Paz Waterfalls,
a boat trip on the Sarapiquí river and a drive through Braulio Carrillo
national park (rain forest).
They will see along the way huge coffee plantations, dairy farms and big
cultivations of strawberries, black berries, ferns and ornamental flowers.
They will take a jungle motor boat to see the jungle and farms along the
Sarapiqui River. Later they will penetrate the heart of Costa Rica's famous
Braulio Carrillo National Park, an immense tract of mountainous rainforest
with breathtaking views.
|
The Butterfly
Farm:
This is a great place to visit. It is located just outside of San José
. Students will learn about the relationship between the beautiful winged
insects, their host plants and their predators, as well as the amazing
transformations that take place within their life cycle.
|
|
| |
|
Zoo Ave:
Students visit a non-traditional zoo park located in La Garita, Alajuela.
It is a center of birds in danger of extinction. It is also home of local
and foreign species. This zoo is a unique experiment of rescuing wildlife.
|
|
| |
|
|
|
Isla
Tortuga:
This is a trip by the sea. Students enjoy the sparkling ocean and the scenery
offered by the picturesque islands of the Gulf of Nicoya. The Tortuga Island
has an exotic white sand tropical beach. The ocean on the Tortuga Island
is quite calm and appropriate for swimming and kayaking.
|
Beach & Rain Forest
tour>:
Students travel to the Pacific coast to the Carara Biological Reserve. They
visit one of the few places showing the transition between rain forest and
the dry tropical forest. This characteristic has made this trip very informative,
since they can find a wide diversity of birds, plants, reptiles and other
mammals.
After hiking the forest students will go to a beach hotel where they can
enjoy the hotel facilities, as well as the beach. |
|
| |
|
|
|
Monteverde Cloud Forest (2 days, 1 night):
This is one of the best areas to see beautiful mountains with plenty of animals.
The hotel has a breath taking view of both the Arenal volcano and lake. Lava
flows from the active volcano which is best seen at night, creating an
unforgettable experience. Complementing this experience the students hike
through the cloud forest.
|

fields and other sports facilities.
