| Overview:
The growth of the Latino and Spanish speaking population in the U.S.
has grown exponentially over the past two decades. The current literature
indicates the need for linguistic and cultural competency. Federal agencies
note issues related to health care disparities by ethnic group. Professional
associations note the importance and utility of developing linguistic and
cultural competency for competent transcultural medical practice.
Medical Spanish language and cultural immersion is designed for all
medical personnel: Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants,
nursing professionals, occupational therapists, social workers, mental health
workers, psychologists and others.
1) Participants will increase their linguistic skills related to
patient care in the following areas:
a) Conversational language skills with
target population
b) Medical evaluation skills in interviewing
patient in mother tongue of patient.
c) Explanation of medical illness, diagnosis,
medical procedures and use of medication necessary to treat patient disorder
including
explanations, as appropriate to patient
family.
2) Participants will increase their cultural competency and transcultural
medical practice skills related to patient care in the following areas:
a) Conversational language skills with
target population in consideration of potential patient cultural
factors.
b) Medical evaluation skills in interviewing
patient in mother tongue of patient in consideration of potential patient
cultural factors.
c) Explanation of medical illness, diagnosis,
medical procedures and use of medication necessary to treat patient disorder
including explanations, as appropriate to patient family in consideration
of potential patient cultural factors.
