The growth of the Latino and Spanish speaking population in the U.S. has grown exponentially over the past two decades. The current literature indicates the need for linguistic and cultural competency. Federal agencies note issues related to health care disparities by ethnic group. Professional associations note the importance and utility of developing linguistic and cultural competency for competent transcultural medical practice.

Medical Spanish language and cultural immersion is designed for all medical personnel: Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants, nursing professionals, occupational therapists, social workers, mental health workers, psychologists and others.

1) Participants will increase their linguistic skills related to patient care in the following areas:

       a) Conversational language skills with target population

       b) Medical evaluation skills in interviewing patient in mother tongue of patient.

       c) Explanation of medical illness, diagnosis, medical procedures and use of medication necessary to treat patient disorder including
          explanations, as appropriate to patient family.

2) Participants will increase their cultural competency and transcultural medical practice skills related to patient care in the following areas:

        a) Conversational language skills with target population in consideration of potential patient cultural factors.

       b) Medical evaluation skills in interviewing patient in mother tongue of patient in consideration of potential patient cultural factors.

     c) Explanation of medical illness, diagnosis, medical procedures and use of medication necessary to treat patient disorder including      
                   explanations, as appropriate to patient family in consideration of potential patient cultural factors.

FEATURED MEDICAL SPANISH PROGRAM:
COSTA RICA MEDICAL SPANISH IMMERSION AND MEDICAL CLINIC PRACTICE OPTION, Rancho del Espanol Spanish School:

This option includes 24 hours per week of Spanish immersion classes at different levels of proficiency with medical emphasis and 9 hours per week of practice with doctors and nurses in a local medical clinic. This option can include a homestay and meals in a private room with a Costa Rican family or other accommodations options. Classes begin EVERY Monday throughout the year at our Rancho de Español Spanish School just 20 minutes from the international airport in San José, Costa Rica.

Our Medical Spanish Immersion Programs include Medical Spanish classes, homestays with meals or other accommodations and clinic medical practice hours.
Our standard Medical Spanish Program includes 24 hours of Medical Spanish Classes at the school, 9 hours of medical clinic practice and homestays with meals.
Those students arriving with less Spanish skills may be recommended to begin with the Intensive Spanish Program below prior to focusing on Medical Spanish and integrating clinic experience.
