PRESENTS OUR COPAN RUINAS VILLAGE SCHOOL IN COPAN RUINAS
IXBALANQUE
SPANISH LANGUAGE IMMERSION SCHOOL
COPAN RUINAS, HONDURAS
Hi Charley
(Aventuras Languages),
We loved Copan
Ruinas. It was so safe for both Erin and me. I took daily runs along the
highway, and never worried about personal safety. Erin walked all over town
by herself, and that was fine. The school (Ixbalanque Spanish School) and
the teachers were very warm. The best teacher we experienced was Erika...Erin
did really enjoy Belkys, because they went to her house a few times to paint
their nails. The excursions were nice.
With the school (in La Ceiba), we took
an excursion to Sambo Creek, a garifuna village on the beach...We also took
a school-organized nature walk near the Rio Condregal , which ended in a
swim. That was spectacular. On the Sunday before we started classes, Erin
and I went to the Jungle River Lodge and did both the zipline and river rafting,
also on the Rio Condregal. Those were really great experiences. The river
is unbelievably beautiful, and the rafting was so much mor e exhilarating
than any river rafting I have done in the states. Our host families in both
locations were lovely.Of course you may pass my e-mail address on to anyone
who wants to learn about the Honduras schools. Our family has moved to Brussels,
so e-mail is the best way to contact me. We plan to study French while we
are here, but I hope to find some local resources for maintaining our Spanish
as well. Of course, Erin and I have to make our yearly trip to a spanish-speaking
country. So please keep your eyes open for a suitable school in Spain!
~Sincerely, Anne
Kelly,

About Ixbalanque
School
Ixbalanque Spanish
School was founded in 1990, and is the oldest language school in Honduras.
Our goal is teaching the Spanish language, in a cultural context, to visitors
of all nationalities and all levels of language skill.
|
|
Whether you are a
tourist visiting Central America, or a businessperson who wants to improve
your Spanish skills, you can trust Ixbalanque to deliver the highest quality
of instruction available. Our experienced, professional teachers are second
to none in their commitment to enhancing your Spanish
skills.
![[Image]](pict140.jpg)
Our roomy, attractive
campus can accommodate up to 30 students at a time, and is located right
in the heart of downtown Copan Ruinas. Just half a mile away is the famous
Mayan ruin site of Copán, renowned for its monumental archeological
structures and sculptures. Experience the rich historical legacy of the ruins,
which marvelously express the high stage of development reached by Mayan
empire, 700 years before the arrival of the Spaniards.
![[Image]](pict141.jpg) |
"The experience and enthusiasm of the
instructors was great! Every day my teacher found an entertaining way to
improve my Spanish and have fun at the same time."
- Katie, Santa Barbara, California |
Our teaching
philosophy is thoroughly modern and effective: full interactive immersion
from the moment you enter our building. Your creative participation is the
key to learning --and mastering-- the Spanish language. Upon arrival you'll
take a brief entrance exam to determine exactly what areas you need to improve.
We typically provide
one
teacher for each student, ensuring that your unique developmental needs will
be met. We will occasionally increase the number of students per class for
specific high school or university groups, where the students share the same
levels of
ability.
| The
daily schedule consists of 4 hours of class, with a brief break in the middle
of each session, for a total of 20 hours of classtime each week. We strongly
emphasize practicing -individually, or in small groups- the Spanish words
and grammar learned that day. Whether your class takes place in a classroom,
or on our flowered patio, or out on the streets of Copán Ruinas, our
goal is to get you speaking Spanish. Some classes will discuss various aspects
of Latin American culture and society, so that you're learning the language
in the context of its culture. At other times we'll organize your class around
themes or subjects you personally find interesting. |
|
|
Our expert staff
is specialized in drawing upon diverse teaching resources and tools to achieve
the full participation - and maximum improvement - of the students. You will
live with friendly and dynamic families that will facilitate a bond between
the students and the diverse social and cultural activities that take place
in our environment. The families are all middle class by Honduran standards,
and are required to provide:
![[Image]](pict144.jpg) |
* A room solely
for the student that locks with a key
* Sheets for the bed and toilet paper
* Purified water
* Daily cleaning of the room and three meals per day
* A fan, a reading lamp, a table and a chair
* Screened window
* Laundry service.
* Spanish practice. |

We recommend arriving in Copan by Saturday in order to start your class week
on a Monday. Your flight will be either into San Pedro Sula, Honduras or
into Guatemala City, Guatemala. There are more flight choices into Guatemala
City. Hedman-Alas (www.HedmanAlas.com) bus company runs the service from
either location. The ONLY bus from Guatemala City leaves each morning at
5am and takes 5 hours to Copan Ruinas. There are more frequent buses from
San Pedro Sula and the bus trip to Copan Ruinas is 3 hours long. We will
provide you consultation about decisions of where to fly into and advantages
of both,
other
than
the above notations.

Frequently-asked
Questions
|
|
| Why study Spanish
in Copán Ruinas?
We at Ixbalanque believe
that Copán Ruinas offers the Spanish student the perfect balance of
educational excellence and cultural opportunity. Yes, there are large cities
(Antigua, Oaxaca) where you can also study Spanish. And , of course, a city
of 500,000 people will have more attractions -and, distractions!- than a
town of 6,000. Still, if your goal is to learn Spanish in a cultural context,
we feel very strongly that a small town with a world-class cultural heritage
is far better suited to achieving that goal. Antigua, for example, has 97
language schools, all within a few blocks of the town center. Assume at any
given time that each school has ten students, and you'll see that your "immersion
experience" will be shared with a thousand other students speaking English,
French, German, Swedish or Italian, but when they meet each other, they are
definitely not speaking Spanish! In Copán Ruinas, by contrast, the
20-30 students in town will be truly immersed in a non-cosmopolitan population
of unjaded, friendly villagers who ONLY speak Spanish.
It's
also important to consider the quality of the family-living experience. According
to the renowned Lonely Planet Guide for Guatemala, in Antigua, for example,
"too often there are several foreigners staying with the same family at once.
In this case, it's more like a hotel, than a family atmosphere. Also, often
there are separate mealtimes for the students and the family." Such a situation
is inconceivable in Copán Ruinas. Here the families truly delight
in 'adopting' someone from another culture for a week or two. You really
become part of the family. In this environment, your Spanish skills will
soar. *AVENTURAS notes that the reason we do not work with a school in Antigua
is because of reports from students we have spoken with that felt that their
were just too many foreigners speaking English in town.
Here's what Lonely Planet
recommends:"Antigua is not for everyone who wants to study Spanish; there
are so many foreigners about, it takes some real discipline to converse in
Spanish rather than in your native tongue. If you think this will bother
you, consider studying where there are fewer foreign students and more
opportunities to dive headfirst into learning Spanish."
The way we see it, Spanish
school in a large city is an industry. In Copán Ruinas, it's an
opportunity.
What's the weather
like?
Copán Ruinas is
located in the western highlands of Honduras, more the 1,800 feet above sea
level. This altitude is known as tierra templada,
or temperate land, and it is therefore comfortable year-round. The visitor
will experience neither the swelter of the coastal jungles, nor the night-time
chill found at higher elevations to the west and in Guatemala. Like other
tropical countries, Honduras has two seasons - wet and dry. The dry season
usually lasts from December to May, the wet season from June to November.
During the wet season, mornings are typically clear, then thunderstorms build
through the afternoon into a refreshing shower, then the clouds dissipate
in time for a lovely sunset. The coolest months are January and February,
while March and April are the warmest. Still, this is the tropics, so average
temperatures tend not to vary more than 10 degrees Fahrenheit (5
Celsius).
Is it easy to
communicate with home?
It's very easy in Copán
Ruinas to keep in touch with family, friends, or business associates. The
national telephone company, Hondutel, has an office a minute's walk from
the school, where you can place long-distance calls. Or, you could use the
phone at your family's home. It's generally much cheaper to arrange in advance
to receive a call from abroad, rather than to dial from Honduras.
>There are five internet
cafes in town, offering very inexpensive and reliable access to the World
Wide Web.
Is Copán
Ruinas/Honduras safe?
In marked contrast to
its neighbors Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua (which have been ravaged
by war and civil unrest for much of their modern history), Honduras has been
remarkably peaceful. The new president is Western-educated, and committed
to improving the Honduran economy, which continues to suffer the effects
of the devastating Hurricane Mitch in 1998. The president has made very clear
that he views the sustainable development of eco-tourism to be the key to
revitalizing the Honduran economy. In fact, his inaugaration was held at
the ruins of Copán, in order to underscore the importance of eco-tourism
- and Copán Ruinas - to the future of Honduras. We believe the best
way for outsiders to help a poor country like Honduras is to visit it, meet
the people, and spend some time and money immersing yourself in another
culture.
The town of Copán
Ruinas is, in fact, very safe, and very welcoming to visitors. This is what
the respected Moon travel guide has to say about Copán Ruinas: "It's
hard not to be charmed by the relaxed friendliness of the place. In contrast
to many Guatemalan mountain towns, Copán Ruinas evinces an overwhelming
sense of safeness and a lack of resentful, tense vibes between locals and
foreign visitors. Any afternoon and evening in the square, one can watch
schoolchildren playing, elders liesurely passing the time of day, and a young
man plucking a tune on his guitar under the admiring gaze of his
girl."
Do you teach children,
too?
>Children are very
welcome at Ixbalanque! We've had many families study here, and have developed
a kids-friendly curriculum to keep the youngsters engaged and happy. Most
of the families who house our students have children of their own, who, like
all kids, are quick to make friends. Also, we can arrange visits for your
kids to local schools, an experience that will prove unforgettable. We think
studying Spanish for a week or two in a safe and friendly Central American
town is a wonderful way to encourage in a child an adventurous spirit of
travel and a lifelong respect for other cultures. By the way, yes, there's
a pizza parlor, and several ice cream shops in town~.
FAMILIES: Families coming with children and teens
to study are able to stay in the same homestay family
or we can make other arrangements. Sometimes teens prefer to
be with their own family for better integration of the language,
so we can also arrange this. Be sure to note that we receive
many families each year where one of the family members, usually
one parent, already knows
that language or just prefers to not study.
This is fine with us!
Is there medical
care or a pharmacy in town?
>There are four pharmacies
and an English-speaking doctor in town, as well as ambulance service to the
hospital, 1.5 hours away. We recommend that visitors carry with them all
the prescription medicines they will need during their stay.
Can you recommend
a good guidebook for the area?
> There are a number
of books that discuss Copán Ruinas, Honduras, or Central America.
The Moon Handbook of
Honduras,
and the Lonely Planet Guide to
Guatemala (with a large section on Copán Ruinas)
are indispensable. Also look for
Adventures In Nature Honduras. |
