LANGUAGE IMMERSION SCHOOLS IN MEXICO AVENTURAS LANGUAGES HOME
Hola Charley, Everything is going wonderfully! I think there have been 10-12 partos since I´ve been here, so it´s been an incredibly busy week. Even though Í´m a bit tired, it has been an amazing opportunity to learn alot. My first day or two were a bit disorienting because I wasn´t sure what I should do and if I was getting in the way. Also, even though half my friends back home are Mexican and I speak spanish with them often, it´s a different thing to be totally emersed and also have to use it in a completely different context, like birth. But by the third day I eased into things and became much more comfortable with the language and assisting with births and consultations. The family is really wonderful and welcoming just like you told me, so that really helps. I´m thoroughly enjoying the work and the experiences and the people, just maybe I won´t want to leave when the five weeks are up! Thank you for checking up on me! ! :) ~Julia Pollard, San Francisco Bay Area, June 2009
CUERNAVACA, MEXICO (1 hour
south of Mexico City): Angelina Martinez Miranda, a traditional Mexican midwife,
was trained by her great-grandmother, grandmother and mother from the age
of 9. She was a featured international speaker at the September 2007 Midwifery
Conference in Norway as well as conferences this year in Italy and Germany
(www.Midwiferytoday.com/conferences/Norway2007).
You will have the opportunity to study and learn midwifery from her perspective
using herbs and prayers as well as inducing labor with IV Pitocin and going
in her scrubs into the ER when the need arises. One student helped her deliver
100 babies during a three month internship. Study for as little as one week
up to several months. Study Spanish at the same time in a formal school setting
or in private classes at Angelina's home. This is a very unique opportunity
and is limited to only a few students spaced throughout the year. Contact
us in advance to set up this opportunity. Cost varies depending upon your
need for Spanish language classes, whether you live with Angelina or elsewhere,
length of studies and more. Angelina is a both a personal friend and professional
colleague of AVENTURAS LANGUAGES Directors, Charley Hodson, LCSW, and Laura
Manning, LCSW. Please contact AVENTURAS LANGUAGES for a consultation regarding

Angelina Martinez Miranda Bio from Midwifery Today (www.midwiferytoday.com) Angelina Martinez Miranda is a traditional midwife living and practicing in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. She is the inheritor of three generations of midwifery knowledge; her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were all traditional midwives, practicing for around 40 years each. Angelina combines their wisdom with the many courses she has taken in midwifery and related subjects to keep up-to-date with evidence-based obstetrics. Angelina operates a birthing center, located next to her home, where, for years, she and her apprentices have attended an average of 23 births per month, with excellent outcomes. She is highly respected in her community. She is a long-time member of Midwives' Alliance of North America (MANA) Mexico and a founding member of a new state organization created by the traditional midwives of Morelos. An accomplished speaker, she has given talks and workshops at international conferences in South America and the U.S. and was one of the two traditional midwives who attended the ICM Congress in Vienna in 2002. She is a strong source of inspiration for the many traditional midwives in Mexico who are working to preserve and revitalize their profession for the future.'
Angelina was one of the featured speakers at this international midwifery conference for midwives, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals in Cuernavaca, Mexico in August 2007. The medical and midwifery conference will work to bridge traditional midwifery and traditional medical and healing practices with modern medicine. NEW!!! Just in.
