Opportunities to Work in an Orphanage |
|
| We are
working
at the moment
with three orphanages/shelters. In Quito, we work with a shelter that recruits
children from the streets. The project works with these street children and
their parents to help them to change their conditions, attempting to get
them off the streets. The children work with social workers and psychologists
to help them modify their behavior. They are also provided with a free education,
a basic education until they are 15 or 16 years old. Although they may choose
to continue their education, most will learn trades, becoming carpenters,
plumbers, electricians, etc. The shelter also runs an orphanage in the town
of Ambato, where they have street children whose parents have abandoned them
or cannot be found. The children study, learn about and practice agriculture
and do their homework. With the money they get from agriculture they help
support the orphanage.
There is another orphanage in Ambato as well. It has very young children from about 1 month to 5 years old. An Italian priest and several nuns run the orphanage. It is a very well organized orphanage with a good infrastructure and great kids. Ø Finally, there is an orphanage called El Paraiso where participants work with kids who have been abandoned by their parents. Its main branch is located in the south part of Quito. This is a very nice orphanage; participants help with the work that social workers do or psychologists, they can also help with sports, with the orphans' activities. This orphanage has two other branches. One on the coast, and one in the Amazon jungle so whenever participants feel like changing regions they can work in any of these orphanages. Volunteers mostly go to the coast and help there after having helped in Quito. The children are from 5 years old up to 17 years old there are many children and teenagers in this orphanage. |
